Garage door tracks and cables: the parts that fail quietly

Springs break with a bang and everybody notices. Tracks, cables, drums and bearings do something worse: they degrade for months without making a sound, then let go all at once, usually with the door halfway. A frayed lifting cable that snaps under load drops one side of the door, jams it in the tracks and can bend the panels beyond repair, and the failure was visible for a long time before it happened. This guide is the five minute inspection that catches all of it, and the rules about which parts you can touch.

The load path, in order

Understanding what is carrying what makes the inspection obvious.

The spring winds the shaft. The shaft turns the cable drums. The drums wind the lifting cables. The cables run down each side and terminate at the bottom brackets on the bottom panel. The rollers keep the door in the tracks, and the tracks steer it. Every one of those items is in the load path, and the whole system is only as good as its worst component.

Cables

Lifting cables are stranded steel, usually a few millimetres in diameter, and they fail in predictable places.

Where to look:

  • At the bottom bracket, where the cable loops around a pin. Water sits here, and this is where corrosion starts.
  • At the drum, where the cable makes its tightest bend and where it can jump a groove.
  • Anywhere it rubs against a bracket, a track edge or a wall.

What you are looking for:

  • Broken strands. Individual wires standing proud of the lay, sometimes called a fish hook. One broken strand means the cable is on borrowed time.
  • Kinks. A permanent bend from being pinched or from the door dropping. A kinked cable never recovers.
  • Rust and orange staining, particularly near the bottom bracket. Coastal houses see this early, and it is one of the reasons the whole specification changes near the surf as covered in Colorbond doors and coastal corrosion.
  • Slack in one cable when the door is closed, which usually means it has come off the drum groove or a drum set screw has slipped.
  • Flattening or wear polish where the cable has been running against something it should not touch.

The rule: cables are replaced in pairs, and only with the spring load off the system. A cable is under full counterbalance load whenever the door is down. This is not a job to start on a Saturday afternoon.

Drums and the shaft

The cable drums are grooved and clamped to the shaft with set screws. When those set screws slip, one drum stops keeping pace with the other, the cable slackens, and the door goes up crooked.

Signs of trouble:

  • The door leans, with one side arriving at the top before the other.
  • A cable that is tight on one side and loose on the other.
  • Visible scoring or witness marks on the shaft next to a drum, showing it has been slipping.
  • A rasping or grinding noise from one end of the shaft, which is usually an end bearing rather than the drum.

Bearings are cheap and are usually replaced whenever the spring is done, because getting to them means taking the load off anyway. If yours is howling, mention it when you book the spring.

Tracks

Track faults are the easiest to see and the most commonly ignored.

  • Dents and flat spots. Anything that has hit the track leaves a bruise, and the roller has to climb over it every cycle. This is a classic cause of a door reversing at the same height every time, which is the first thing to check in why your garage door reverses before it closes.
  • Loose or pulled brackets. Look where the track fixes to the timber or masonry. Gaps, movement or a fixing that has pulled through mean the track geometry has changed.
  • Track spacing. The vertical tracks should be parallel and plumb. If the gap between the door and the track varies as the door travels, something has moved.
  • Debris and gunk. Old grease plus dust makes a paste that slows the door and eats rollers. Tracks should be clean and dry, with lubrication on the hinges and roller stems, not smeared through the track channel.
  • The curve. The radius section where vertical meets horizontal takes the most abuse. Look for a flattened or opened-out curve.

Hinges and brackets

On a sectional door, the hinges between panels carry the roller stems and hold the door together as it flexes through the curve.

  • Look for elongated holes where a hinge has worn or torn its fixings.
  • Look for cracking in the panel skin around a hinge, which usually means the door has been forced or has come out of the track at some point.
  • Check the top bracket where the opener arm attaches. It sees every start and stop the motor makes.
  • Never undo a bottom bracket while the door is down. It anchors the lifting cable and carries the full spring load.

The five minute routine

Do this twice a year, or quarterly near the coast.

  1. Open the door fully and unplug the opener.
  2. Run your eyes down both cables, top to bottom, using a torch. Broken strands, kinks, rust.
  3. Look at both drums for even cable lay and check the door is level when it is halfway.
  4. Sight down both vertical tracks and both horizontal tracks for dents and misalignment.
  5. Check every track bracket fixing for movement.
  6. Spin a couple of rollers by hand.
  7. Wipe the tracks clean, lubricate hinges and roller stems.
  8. Reconnect, then pull the release with the door shut and do the balance test: lift by hand to halfway and let go. It should stay. If it does not, book someone.

What you can and cannot do yourself

Cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, tightening a track bracket fixing, and replacing an upper roller are all reasonable homeowner jobs.

Anything involving the cables, the drums, the shaft, the bottom brackets or the springs is not, because all of it is under counterbalance load and none of it is discharged by unplugging the opener or pulling the release cord. Getting parts and getting it done

Track sections, brackets, drums and cable sets come up regularly in the tracks category, and complete hardware sets often appear when a door is replaced. Match the track profile and the drum size to what you have, and photograph the old part against a tape measure before you buy.
