A garage door torsion spring is the most dangerous component on an average Australian house. It sits on a steel shaft above the opening, wound tight enough to counterbalance a door that can weigh more than the person standing under it, and it holds that energy every second of every day whether the door is open or shut. Releasing it without the right bars, the right technique and the right experience is how people lose fingers, teeth and eyes. This guide explains what the spring does, how to recognise a failure, and why the sensible move is to hand the job to a qualified installer rather than a weekend and a YouTube video.

What the spring is actually doing

Your motor does not lift the door. The spring does. The motor only supplies the small extra push and pull needed to get a balanced door moving and to hold it in place, which is why opener force is measured in Newtons and why those numbers are so modest compared with the weight of the door itself. A torsion system works like this. A steel shaft runs horizontally above the door opening, carried in bearing plates at each end and usually a centre bracket. One or more springs sit on that shaft. Cable drums are fixed to each end of the shaft, and steel lifting cables run from those drums down to the bottom brackets on the bottom panel of the door. When the spring is wound, it twists the shaft, the drums wind the cables, and the cables carry the door.

Everything in that chain is under load: the spring, the shaft, the drums, the cables and the bottom brackets. That is why the bottom bracket on a sectional door carries a warning label, and why nobody should ever undo it while the door is down and the spring is wound.

Why the stored energy is the whole story

A wound torsion spring is a battery. It does not care that you have turned the power off at the wall, pulled the emergency release cord, or propped the door with a bit of timber. None of that discharges the spring.

When a torsion spring is released without control, the shaft can spin violently, winding bars can be thrown across the garage, and cable drums can shed cables under load. The classic injuries are not exotic: a winding bar that was actually a screwdriver slipping out of a cone, a spring that was already cracked letting go mid-wind, or a set screw backed off on the wrong side of a two-spring system.

There is a second trap. When a spring breaks, the door is no longer counterbalanced. How to tell the spring has failed

Most spring failures announce themselves with a bang, often at night as the steel cools and contracts. After that, the symptoms are consistent:

  • A visible gap in the coil above the door, usually a couple of centimetres, where the spring has snapped.
  • The door will not lift by hand at all, or feels impossibly heavy after the emergency release is pulled.
  • The opener strains, runs and gets nowhere, or lifts a few centimetres and stops.
  • The door goes up crooked, one side lagging, which can mean a broken cable or a drum that has slipped rather than a spring.

Do not diagnose it by repeatedly pressing the wall button. Running an opener against a dead spring is how a good motor becomes a second problem, and it can pull the door out of square or damage the top section. Once you suspect a spring, stop using the door.

What a proper replacement involves

A competent installer will not just swap the broken coil and leave. The job normally covers:

  • Measuring the wire gauge, inside diameter, length and wind direction of the existing spring, because a spring that is close but not correct will leave the door unbalanced and will fail early.
  • Weighing or calculating the door so the replacement spring matches the actual door, not the door the previous owner had before they added a heavier panel.
  • Replacing springs in pairs on a two-spring door, since the surviving spring has done the same work and is at the same point in its life.
  • Inspecting the cables, drums, bearings and bottom brackets while the load is off. These are the parts that quietly kill a door and they are covered in tracks and cables.
  • Winding the springs to the correct number of turns, then testing balance by hand at several points through the travel.
  • Resetting the opener force and travel limits, since a correctly balanced door needs different settings from the one that has been fighting a tired spring for a year.

Ask what cycle rating the spring is, and ask whether the quote includes cables and drums. Springs are consumables. Cables are consumables. Replacing one and not the other is a return visit waiting to happen.

Buying the parts is not the hard part

Torsion springs, drums, cables and shafts all turn up in the classifieds, and there is nothing wrong with sourcing hardware through the springs category if your installer is happy to fit supplied parts. Plenty are not, for liability reasons, so ask before you buy.

What you cannot buy online is the winding technique, the balance judgement, and the read on whether the top section is about to tear out around the hinges. Where the line sits

There is plenty of garage door maintenance a homeowner can safely do. Cleaning the tracks. Lubricating hinges and rollers with a suitable product.

Torsion spring work is on the other side of the line, along with anything that involves loosening a bottom bracket, unwinding a cone, or dropping a shaft. Australian Standard AS 4505 covers garage doors and other large access doors, and your installer should be working to it. State requirements for licensing and electrical connection vary, so if an opener needs hard wiring rather than a plug, that part is an electrician's job.

The honest summary is short. The spring is cheap. The consequences of getting it wrong are not. Book the installer.
