Garage door motor buying guide: force rating, drive type and door weight

Garage door openers are sold on brand and on features, and bought badly for both reasons. The specification that decides whether a motor will suit your door is unglamorous: how much force it can apply, measured in Newtons, how it delivers that force, and whether the door it is bolted to is properly counterbalanced in the first place. Get those three right and almost any reputable unit will run for years. Get them wrong and you will be back up the ladder inside a season. This guide is the shopping checklist.
Force is rated in Newtons, and it is not lifting the door
The single most common misunderstanding is that the opener lifts the door. It does not. The springs lift the door. The opener supplies the difference between a balanced door and a moving door, plus enough to overcome friction and seals.
That is why a residential opener rated in the several hundred Newton range can move a door weighing well over a hundred kilograms. It is also why fitting a bigger motor to a door with a tired spring is the wrong fix: you are asking the motor to do the spring's job, which shortens the life of the motor, the rail and the door itself.
Before you shop for a motor, test the balance. Pull the emergency release with the door shut, lift the door by hand to about halfway, and let go. A correctly balanced door stays roughly where you put it. If it slams down or shoots up, the spring is the problem, not the opener. Matching force to the door
Manufacturers publish a force rating and usually a maximum door size or area for each model. Both matter. Use the published limits rather than a rule of thumb, and account for:
- Door type. Sectional, roller and tilt doors load an opener differently. A roller door motor that drives the barrel directly is a different machine from a rail opener for a sectional door, and they are not interchangeable. - Door size and material. A double door in insulated panels is a lot more mass than a single uninsulated one.
- Glazing. Glass panels add weight fast.
- Seals and weather stripping. A well sealed door has more friction, particularly on a cold morning.
- Cycle frequency. A door opened four times a day is a different duty to a shared driveway opened twenty times a day. Higher duty is where you look at the heavier residential units or, on commercial doors, at Grifco style gear.
Drive types
Chain drive. A chain pulls the carriage along the rail. Cheapest, proven, and the noisiest of the common options. Fine over a garage nobody sleeps above.
Belt drive. A reinforced belt replaces the chain. Noticeably quieter, which is the entire reason people pay for it, and the default recommendation when a bedroom sits above or beside the garage. Merlin SilentDrive is the name most Australians recognise in this category.
Screw drive. A threaded rod moves the carriage. Fewer moving parts, tolerates a wide temperature range, and sits between chain and belt for noise.
Direct drive. The motor travels along a fixed chain or moves with the carriage. Very few moving parts and very quiet.
Jackshaft. Mounts on the wall beside the door and drives the torsion shaft directly, leaving the ceiling completely clear. This is the answer for a garage with a hoist, a low ceiling, or storage overhead. It requires a torsion spring system in good order and correct headroom, so it is a specification conversation with an installer rather than an impulse purchase.
Roller door barrel motors. For roller doors, the motor mounts to the barrel and rotates it. Simple, compact, and the standard approach for a Roll-A-Door style curtain.
Features worth paying for, and features that are noise
Worth it for most people:
- Soft start and soft stop. Less shock through the door, quieter, and easier on the hardware.
- Battery backup. If your garage is your only entry and you lose power in a storm, this pays for itself the first time.

- Auto close timer, if you are the household that leaves the door up.
- Wi-Fi or app control, if you will actually use it. Check whether the feature needs a subscription and whether the vendor commits to supporting the app.
Less important than the marketing suggests: raw horsepower claims that are not tied to a Newton figure, and lighting specifications. Garage lighting is cheap to solve separately.
Remotes, keypads and the code system
An opener is only as convenient as the handsets that pair with it. Modern Australian gear largely uses the 433.92MHz band with rolling code systems such as ATA TrioCode and B&D Tri-Tran+, and frequency alone does not guarantee anything will pair. New or used

Two things to watch either way. Openers are commonly sold without the rail, which is a significant extra cost and needs to match. And safety beams are model specific, so a unit missing its beams is missing more than a small accessory.
Installation
A plug-in opener fitted to an existing, correctly balanced door is within reach of a competent DIYer, provided you set the travel limits and the force settings properly and test the safety reverse afterwards. Two situations change that: any opener requiring hard wiring rather than a standard plug is electrical work and belongs with a licensed electrician, and any job that involves touching springs, cables or the torsion shaft belongs with a garage door installer.
